As many of you know, Bonnie (Ben's sister), just turning 40 last summer, found a lump in her breast and began noticing a swollen lymph node under her left armpit at the beginning of this year. She scheduled her first mammogram which confirmed her suspicion that she indeed had a tumor. After a biopsy on January 28th, she received news that she had breast cancer: invasive ductal carcinoma, Stage 2. This is the most common kind of breast cancer that originates in the milk ducts, but it is also fast-growing. She does have a lymph node completely replaced by tumor, and the status of the others is not yet known.
Being medically savvy as a veterinarian, Bonnie has taken on the mission of fighting this head on. Bonnie connected with Dr. Clear of Ft. Collins who conducted a bilateral mastectomy plus excised the lymph nodes on February 11th. Her cancer is a stage II since it is in her lymph, and the other breast tissue will be biopsied as well. She is scheduled to start chemotherapy with a fantastic medical oncologist in mid-March. After several cycles are completed, radiation will be next. The good news is she is hormone receptor positive for estrogen and progesterone indicating a likely good response to treatment. The doctors have told her to plan on treatment and rehab for a year.
As is Bonnie's way, she is handling this with amazing strength and fortitude. She and the boys are talking honestly and openly about all the options, and she is working hard to get all her ducks in a row for the months ahead. Having Tom & Judy in Denver, Vicky (her cousin) in Ft. Collins, coworkers rallying to fill in, her boys "stepping up" to help, and friends and family thinking about, praying for, and helping her are HUGE BLESSINGS!
